To Ink, or Not to Ink…at Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is a time to celebrate. It’s all about peace, love, unity and getting into the carnival way of life. Having just returned, we know how great of a time can be had in New Orleans. For many, Mardi Gras is the perfect time of year. It’s party central, and everyone is eager to get in on the action.
After all, Mardi Gras is the greatest free show on earth. Where else can you party for free in the street? It’s decadent, frivolous and fun. With masks, beads and throws it can be a thrilling way to celebrate. For some, they leave with a more permanent Mardi Gras souvenir: a tattoo. And while some turn out to be amazing reminders of an incredible time, boy, do some of these look bad.
Best Mardi Gras Tattoos
While we don’t advise getting a tattoo during a one of the nation’s largest parties, we have found some that leave us in awe. Here’s a few of our favorite Mardi Gras tattoos.
Beautiful Masquerade Mask
Masquerade masks are a common theme at Mardi Gras celebrations. They are fun, funky and can look really beautiful.
The Artful Jester
Let’s face it, court jesters don’t exactly make for a beautiful looking tattoo. Maybe it’s the bloody dagger in his hand or the evil grin on his face, but this guy is definitely up to something. While this tattoo may give off a sense of malevolence about it, it is very well done.
Amazing Fleur de Lis
Mardi Gras is a time honored New Orleans tradition, and what else screams New Orleans than the fleur de lis.
Worst Mardi Gras Tattoos
There have been some pretty amazing Mardi Gras tattoos, as well as some pretty awful ones as well. Enjoy a good laugh and recoil in the horror at some of these terrible tattoos and marvel at some of the best we have seen.
The Scary Masquerade Mask
Masquerade masks are a common theme at Mardi Gras celebrations. They are fun, funky and look fantastic. Until you allow a bad tattooist to take to your body and etch a tattoo that looks more Halloween themed than Mardi Gras themed. These tattoos look more like Edvard Munch’s ‘Scream’ than brightly colored masks. These are utterly scary and wouldn’t look out of place at a Halloween themed bash!
The Terrifying Jester Face
Let’s face it, court jesters don’t exactly make for a beautiful looking tattoo. But, when they are done badly they can encapsulate terror and fear. Some of the jester tattoos that people have had done in a bid to pay homage to Mardi Gras end up looking more like clowns. What could be more terrifying than a clown themed tattoo? It’s like something from a bad slasher movie.
The Tattooed Beads and Breasts Combo
Who doesn’t want to see an overweight man with poorly tattooed breasts on his chest? Couple this with traditional Mardi Gras beads and you’re in for an eyesore. Let’s face it; the lithe women that are baring their breasts at Mardi Gras look fabulous. But, when you’re a middle-aged man with a paunch, there is definitely no need to tattoo breasts and beads on yourself. The result is horrifying if not hilarious, and definitely a likely candidate for tattoo regret down the road.
The Mis-Spelt Mardi Gras Quotes
“Let the good times roll,” is a favorite quote used at Mardi Gras parades. The translation into French can look cute and alluring. Until the lines of communication and interpretation are blurred, of course. It is hard to know what some of these tattoos translate to, but ink with obvious spelling mistakes needs to be removed ASAP.
When it comes to Mardi Gras, these guys have proved that sometimes it is best to leave the festival with nothing more than happy memories.
